One of my earliest memories of hip hop is hearing Nas say “Blood of a slave, heart of a king” on the Stillmatic intro. As a white kid growing up in the suburbs, that album changed my life and helped me to understand that the world was so much bigger and complex than what I had seen. I could feel the pain in his voice and began to see what atrocities were being committed against people of color on a daily basis. Years later, I am a white rapper--a guest in the sport of hip hop. But as M-1 and stic.man said, “it’s bigger than hip hop”. Last Thursday, May 28th, I watched as the United States began to respond to the aftermath of the police killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. Overtaken with grief, I was almost at a loss for words...but when my friend Jordan spontaneously sent me a mournful instrumental, I knew that I needed to get up and use my voice, sharing my love for this craft and all the beautiful people who created it. Today, less than a week later, I have witnessed many acts of bravery and grace by the black community as our national leadership continues to falter. As a white man, I know that a lot of the work we have to do centers upon educating those who do not yet understand the soulless evils that white supremacy and its devices have brought upon this world. I personally believe that it is not too late for us all, but God only knows.
