One of my earliest memories of hip hop is hearing Nas say “Blood of a slave, heart of a king” on the Stillmatic intro. As a white kid growing up in the suburbs, that album changed my life and helped me to understand that the world was so much bigger and complex than what I had seen. I could feel the pain in his voice and began to see what atrocities were being committed against people of color on a daily basis. Years later, I am a white rapper--a guest in the sport of hip hop. But as M-1 and stic.man said, “it’s bigger than hip hop”.
Last Thursday, May 28th, I watched as the United States began to respond to the aftermath of the police killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. Overtaken with grief, I was almost at a loss for words...but when my friend Jordan spontaneously sent me a mournful instrumental, I knew that I needed to get up and use my voice, sharing my love for this craft and all the beautiful people who created it. Today, less than a week later, I have witnessed many acts of bravery and grace by the black community as our national leadership continues to falter. As a white man, I know that a lot of the work we have to do centers upon educating those who do not yet understand the soulless evils that white supremacy and its devices have brought upon this world. I personally believe that it is not too late for us all, but God only knows.

LYRICS:
They killed a brother for the color of his skin again
Reminds me how they treated Serena at Wimbledon
Sometimes it feels like it’s happening all over again
The Kali Yuga the samsara the hell within
To hell with anyone really being a racist
Rubber bullets mace sniffs
villainy is faceless
My second cousin
Asked me for supreme
He ain’t even 13
he just want the logo tee
We the ones that sold the dream
Now it’s time for waking up
Now it’s time for everything
Lot of people 'fraid as fuck
Saw the others getting ducks
In a row
There’s some things that don’t really sit right
With my soul
There’s some things that got me feeling like i’m bout to blow
And when i think about my black friends
God only knows
God only knows
We’re getting close
As i walk through the valley
Saw the spectre of a rally
Saw myself in all my glory all my folly all my doubting
Saw that in this moment all we have ever have is
A finale of another era that came before us
Like the galley of a slave ship traveling across the transatlantic
This is nothing new as the institutions that sat and planned it
Nobody should claim dominion
Hit Williamsburg Virginia
Saw a haunted house
Swear that shit it had me listening
I ain’t buggin out
Always knew the spirit battle stomping grounds
One way or another has a special way of leaking out
Maybe i just knew the hatred cuz i grew up in the south
Here’s some things than everyone should probably go and talk about
No one race is better than another
Why in the fuckwould you wanna see em suffer
Why would you ever put that hate up on your brother
Or your sister or your father or your mother
We all related
We all connected
We all are breaking
But i can only imagine what my black friends are thinking
God only knows
God only knows
