As booster shots become available in the United States, many Americans are scrambling to get them. But are these shots the best use of our resources? Who really benefits from them and what is the most prudent way to use our vaccine supplies? @JoeAuerbach3 years ago The real question for me is, "what happens to that dose if I don't get it?". Can it go to a low income country, or will it wind up as medical waste?
If it goes to someone who isn't vaccinated, I'd rather skip it.
If it goes in the trash, I'd rather get it

@terukiito81533 years ago Are there studies out there that look at the level of antibodies? @ElliotShayle3 years ago This was certainly an informative video, although I think it may have missed a couple of important points. Like, I don't think there was any mention of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine, which is widely used here in the UK. Due to it's substantially lower cost, it's also likely to be a key vaccine for the global south as well.
Even though I also strongly agree with the central conclusion that developed nations should donate more vaccines, I feel it wasn't totally clear enough that this advice was from a population health perspective, rather than a personal health perspective. As a scientist, I picked up all the little caveats and distinctions. However, I imagine a vaccine hesitant individual might not pick up on that, but the dismissive tone and suggestion that we should be doing something else instead! I think it needed to be made more clear that these vaccines still have definite positive health effects for an individual offered one. Also, I wonder if booster vaccinations still give you side effects.
So yeah... For a video titled 'Should You Get a Covid Vaccine Booster?' I felt the 'you' part was a bit too lacking. It was more like 'are vaccine boosters a good strategy for dealing with the pandemic?'

@therabbithat3 years ago Here in Ireland around 92% of people over 16 are vaccinated and covid is still a problem, is still causing bottlenecks in our health service even though severe cases and death and long covid are impacting a smaller percentage of people who catch the virus. @huwguyver42083 years ago I don't have a problem in theory with people in developing countries getting their first two shots over my getting a booster if that is what is best to contain the virus, but my concern is that what will actually happen with unused doses here (Australia) is that they will not be given to the vulnerable in other countries, but rather will simply sit around in storage and expire. ... 5

@stephenahancock3 years ago I had no reaction to my first two Pfizer vaccine shots. Three days after my booster shot I started experiencing episodes of lung discomfort and shortness of breath. Over the next month it became much worse to the point where I was feeling pressure in my chest during these attacks. I went to the doctor and they sent me for a CT scan to eliminate blood clots in the lungs. Tests came back negitive and the doctor diagnosed me with asthma. I was given Flovent HFA and Albuterol inhalants. That has helped the problem quickley and sgnificantly. I am 70 and never experianced any asthma symptoms before. I don't know if this was caused by the booster shot, and I'm sure I never will, or just a coincidence. I question Pfizer giving a full dose where Moderna's booster is half a dose. ... 39

@AnnikaOakinnA3 years ago I find it interesting that you stress so heavily that "serious infections" should be the metric rather than infections full-stop when people who experience lasting effects or Long COVID may not have been severely ill at the time of infection, nothing requiring medical intervention and yet symptoms lingering for months. I recognize that it mostly fits with how vaccines work generally, helping our immune system to respond faster if exposed but not always preventing infection altogether, but most of those diseases seem to have less lingering effects than COVID. How is "serious infection" defined? Do we have data on whether vaccination affects Long COVID outcomes (in either breakthrough cases or vaccinations after illness)? ... 36

@robinm13313 years ago The question I have is based on individual behavior vs policy. Ideally we would be getting more vaccine to more places that dont have it rather than rely on booster shots for all but people at high risk. However, that is a policy decision and not something that I, as an individual, can directly change other than lending my voice to the cause. So what individuals are left with is the ethical quandry- given vaccines aren't currently being distributed equitably, is it a good or bad idea to get a booster shot when they are widely available in the states? ...

@Emilissimi3 years ago Your last point regarding equity and new variations is maybe the single most important argument against giving booster shots. That being said, there are those who are immune suppressed/compromised that had little to effect from the initial two shots and thus can almost be regarded as non-vaccinated. I think one can argue for a booster shot for them, and maybe for the health-care workers (and that’s a BIG maybe) working closely with these patients. ... 7

@leifharmsen3 years ago Vaccine supply is not limited. I’m not immune compromised and have no pre-existing conditions, but with all the booster talk lately it was hard to cut through the static and get a clear picture as to weather or not I should get a booster at this point. @p.g.81383 years ago I'm not against getting a booster. If they have proof the booster protects against ending up in hospital, that's good too. I do have a big problem with the booster in one area. Every person has different immunity after getting the original one or two shots. One person could have 95% immunity another could have 30% including those with a compromised immune system. Just giving every person a booster after 6 months doesn't seem right to me. If you already have a high percentage of immunity and get a booster it could cause side effects. I'm not getting my booster right to the day after 6 months for that reason. ... 4
